Neutralitybecame challenging to maintain once the Jay Treaty wassigned with Britain, giving them easier trade with theUnited States. France was angered, and the Americanswanted to negotiate peace. At this time the U.S. navy wasbattling French ships in the Caribbean. Three U.S.representatives were sent to France and met by three French agents who demanded a bribe of £50,000.The Americans refused. X Y Z USA wanted to remain neutral in the war betweenBritain and France. WAR You want to negotiate peace? We want £50,000as a bribe. Suspicious U.S. citizens insisted that President John Adams publish all communications with France, and in doing so, he replaced the namesof the agents with X, Y, and Z. Americans were outraged by the disrespectful treatment and request; many wanted to go to war. The attempted transaction was later referred to as the XYZ Affair.
