At this time the navy wasbattling French ships in the Caribbean. Three U.S.representatives were sent to France and met by three French agents who demanded a bribe of £50,000.The Americans refused. X Y Z USA wanted to remain neutral in the war betweenBritain and France. WAR You want to negotiate peace? We want £50,000as a bribe. Suspicious U.S. citizens insisted that President John Adams publish all communications with France, and in doing so, he replaced the names of the agents withX, Y, and Z.
