This is the lava flow from the Kilauea volcano. This is the lava flow from the Kilauea volcano. This is where the volcano is located. The environmental impact is the lava burns anything that it touches. So when itgoes through agriculture land it burns down the plants that were there. After thelava hardens the land is unusable for many many years. The lava burns manyhomes, buildings, and roads. It will be hard to rebuild on the hardened lava. The challenges that people are dealing with are trying to protect their homes, land, buildings, roads, and telephone poles from being destroyed by the lava flow. Thetelephone poles need to be protected so it doesn't cut power off to the communities. The Hawaii electric company is wrapping heat resistant material around thetelephone pole so they don't catch on fire. Another thing that people are doing isthey are spraying water on the lava flow to cool the lava down to make it move slower.Slowing the lava down gives people more time to move out of their homes that are inthe path of the lava flow. What are the challenges people have to over come? People putting water on the lava flowin the hope it will slow down. Dirt being put up against the telephonepoles to prevent them from coming downand cuttin of power to the community. This is where the lava flow has been. http://s.newsweek.com/sites/www.newsweek.com/files/styles/embedded_full/public/2014/10/27/10-27-14-volcano-map.jpg?itok=LVbiu49q http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/kilauea-volcano-lava-prompts-u-s-national-guard-deployment-1.2818794 The United States National Guard had to come in to give support to communities closeto the advancing lava flow. The reason why it cost money is because the U.S. has topay the wages of the people that had to come in. The National Guard are reservesoldiers who have full time civilian jobs. When they are called out to help, their civilianjobs are empty and the work is not done or the companies has to hire more employeesto keep the work flowing. Another economic impact is when the lava flow gets to afarmer's crop it burns all of the agriculture that was there. So the farmer loses moneybecause they could not sell their crops and the stores would not get their food.Tourism is very big in Hawaii. With the lava flow approaching communities and cuttingoff roads less people are coming due to the fact that it is more unsafe than usual. Now there is less tourism money for the communities. http://www.edu.pe.ca/gulfshore/Archives/volcanoe/kilauea/kv.jpg http://s1.ibtimes.com/sites/www.ibtimes.com/files/styles/v2_article_large/public/2014/10/29/rtr4bz7n.jpg?itok=VB6zZmDK Sources http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Guard_of_the_United_Stateshttp://www.cbc.ca/news/world/kilauea-volcano-lava-prompts-u-s-national-guard-deployment-1.2818794http://www.ibtimes.com/kilauea-update-hawaii-lava-flow-complicates-volcano-tourism-1715819http://www.hawaiielectriclight.com/helco/_hidden_Hidden/Hawaii-Electric-Light-Preparing-for-Potential-Impacts-from-Lava-Flow?cpsextcurrchannel=1
