Sleep is a periodic, natural, reversible loss of consciousness distinct from unconsciousness resulting from a coma, general anesthesia, or hibernation 4 theories:1) protects (keeps us safe and healthy)2) helps us recover (brain tissue restored and repaired)3) helps us remember and think creatively (memories rebuilt and restored)4) may play a role in the growth process (growth hormone released) Why do we sleep? sleep involves five stages through which we cycle about every 90 minutes sleep deprivation.. what does it lead to? -drained energy- low feelings of well-being- altered metabolism-high blood pressure-memory impairment-irritability- slow performance - impaired concentration- high risk to illness and viruses - depressed immune system- greater chance of gaining weight- increased accidents So how can you get more sleep? - avoid caffeine- don't exercise in the evening- relax before bedtime- sleep on a regular schedule- avoid naps- if all else fails, settle for less sleep ....Or stress?
