In the dry season, it only rainsabot 4 in and durind December, January and February it doesent rain at all. Every year large amounts of the Savanna are lost to the Sahara dessert. Savannas are located in Africa,Madagascar (an island off theeast coast of Africa), Australia,South America, India, and theMyanmar-Thailand region ofSoutheast Asia. The animals that live insavannas have adapted to agreat deal of variability in thefood supply throughout theyear; there are times of plenty(during and after the wetseason) and times of almostno food or water (during the dryseason). Many savannaanimals migrate to deal withthis problem. Plants of the savannas arehighly specialized to grow inthis environment of longperiods of drought. They havelong tap roots that can reachthe deep water table, thickbark to resist annual fires,trunks that can store water,and leaves that drop of duringthe winter to conserve water. . Average temperature is 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. There are many types of grasses in the savanna, such as Rhodes grass, red oats grass and lemon grass. The Bermuda grass that many plant in their lawns is native to the African savanna as is elephant grass, which can grow 10 feet (3 m) tall.
