Local education focus on challenges that face their communities, informing students of issues like youth violence, hunger, and poverty. Global education topics focus on buildOn project countries-Nicaragua, Haiti, Mali, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Malawi and Nepal Service: Service is the core of buildOn's mission, and is thevehicle for youth development and empowerment. Through service ,students address problems in their communities while developing personal leadership and teamwork skills. By making a positive difference in the lives of others, they learn more about themselves and the power they have to transform their schools, their communities, and our world. buildOn's mission is to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations through service and education. In the U.S buildOn runs extensive Service Learning Programs that empowers students from underserved high schools to improve their lives, their communities, and their world through community service and service learning. Service is the most important component of buildOn's Service Learning Program. buildOn defines positive youth development not as what we do for students, but what they do for their communities and for themselves through service. Building Schools: Select buildOn students are chosen to participate in an intensive global service learning experience, where they travel to some of the economically poorest countries on the planet to help build schools. For up to ten days, they live and work with host families in rural villages, forging meaningful relationships. 2,273 STUDENTS ENGAGEDWEEKLY. 194,867HOURSOFSERVICE STUDENTSONTREK
