She had one younger sister named Grace was born on December 29 1889. Amelia and Grace lots of different activities like playing tennis, riding bikes, and horseback riding. Amelia graduated from Hyde Park High School and Columbia University. Amelia attended a Amelia's parents traveled a lot so Amelia and Grace stayed with their grandmother. Amelia loved her grandmother even though she could be mean and strict. FIRST TIME FLYING On December 28, 1920 Amelia and her father visited an air show in California. Amelia went on her first plane ride that day.She said later that "I knew I had to fly" as soon as the plane was just a few 100 feet of the ground. Amelia worked hard and, together with some money from her mom she was able to pay for flying lessons and she was able to purchase a small yellow airplane nicknamed the "Canary." She also got her pilots license. BEST KNOWN FOR Amelia is best known as being the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, in 1928. She is also the first person to fly over both the Atlantic and Pacific. FLYING STORY Amelia and her sister Grace did all sorts of things together such ascollecting insects and frogs. They also liked to play sports including baseball, basketball, and football. Amelia even learned how to shoot a 22 riffle and used it to kill rats in her dads barn. Amelia had her first "flight" when she was 7 years old. Her uncle helped her and Grace to make a homemade roller coaster. They gathered wood from their grandmothers backyard and a box. With Grace's help, Amelia got in the wooden box with the wood under it, and slid off the roof of the house. She fell out of the box but she still thought it was fun. But when Amelia's grandmother found out what had happened she was very angry. She wanted Amelia and Grace to sew, wear fancy dresses and read. Amelia said that "it was just like flying." BEFORE FLYING After graduating from high school, Amelia wasn't sure what she wanted to do. She went to the Ogontz school in Pennsylvania, but dropped out to become a nurse tending wounded soldiers from World War I. After that, Amelia studied to become a mechanic, but soon she was back in school studying a career in medicine. Eventually, she decided to go into medical research. That is until she took her first plane flight. Amelia May Earhart was born on July 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kanas. Amelia had one sister, Grace won was two years younger than her.
