Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 Efficiency Statistics COAL Katie PetersenA7 Coal is a non renewable source of energy, meaning it is finite and it used to create electricity and produce heat Positive Effects on the environment Total World electricity generation by fuel Negative effects on the environment How Coal is used When Coal is burned the sulfur in the coal combines with oxygen to form SOx which is the cause of acid rain. Another environmental concern is that coal combustion has partially contributed to the increase in atmospheric CO2 levels. Increased atmospheric CO2 levels may result in warmer climates due to the greenhouse effect. The CO2 in the atmosphere prevents heat from escaping the earth, thus warming the atmosphere. Lastly, coal mining causes serious erosion, resulting in the leaching of toxic chemicalsinto near by streams and bodies of water and ruins habitants. The process starts with coal combustion which boils water in a larger furnace and turns it into steam. The steam is forced at a high temperature and pressure through a turbine, which is like a giant fan. The steam forces the blades of the turbineto spin which turns the heat energy into kinetic energy. The turbineis connected to a generator which is a large magnets with a strong magnetic field in a coil of wire. The turbine spins the coil of wire in the magnetic field, producing electricity. The steam is then cooled and condensed back into water and returned to the boiler to start the process again. -Large deposits of coal available-Very cheap-Easy to store-Easily converted to energy-Safe Hydro 16% Coal Oil Natural Gas Nuclear 41% 5% 21% 13% Coal fired power plants lose about 2/3 of the energy in the coal and only 1/3 of the energy in the coal ends up as electricity. The efficiency of coal is around 29%. Coal is the largest source of energy in the worldaccounting for 40% of all electricity world wide. Coal accounts for 30% of total C02emissions world wide and 72% of C02 emissions from global power generation. Inthe USA it accounts fo4 45% of electricitygeneration and 75% in Austrailia.
