Mr. Wilson knows that things can be easily hidden, but they will always be uncovered, and in the end, hiding something from someone will always disappoint, and true colors will always be revealed. "The next day was broiling, almost the last, certainly the warmest, of the summer."-Nick Motif, Imagery Chapter 7 pg.114 2 "It was after we started with Gatsby toward the house that the gardener saw Wilson's body a little way off in in the grass, and the holocaust was complete."Nick, ExaggerationChapter 8 pg. 163 "It was after we started with Gatsby toward the house that the gardener saw Wilson's body a little way off in in the grass, and the holocaust was complete."-Nick, ExaggerationChapter 8 pg. 163 1 Weather always imitates and coordinates with the events that are taking place in the novel, so the heat and extremity of the weather must mean something serious and significant must be happening. This relates to the theme of leis and deceit, because Nick doesn't know what's going on in this part of the novel with Tom and Daisy, but he is suspicious that something is happening, and that they are not telling them something. 3 This relates to the theme of lying and deceit. Even though this series of events only affected a certain group of people, Nick compares this to a holocaust, which affects large groups of people. He uses this exaggeration to show how strong of an affect that all these lies have had on this limited group of people, and how they resulted in these terrible events. This shows how much Nick is stressing over the situation, and how it is eating at him. He feels guilt and feels like even though he doesn't want to deal with these people, he needs to help them. This goes with the theme of lying and cheating, because he doesn't want to lie and cheat anymore. Instead he wants to start making things right. "I told her she might fool me but she couldn't fool God. I took her to the window and I said 'God knows what you've been doing. You may fool me but you can't fool God!' Standing behind him, Michaelis saw with a shock that he was looking at the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg."-Mr. Wilson and Nick Metaphor Chapter 8 pg.160 Quote & Literary Device Analysis & Theme The Great Gatsby Lies & Deciet The Great Gatsby Lies & Deciet 4 4 "I couldn't sleep all night; a foghorn was groaning incessantly on the sound, and I tossed half sick between grotesque reality and savage, frightening dreams."-Nick Imagery, PersonificationChapter 8 pg. 147 Daisy Myrtle
