Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 Gatorade is a sports drink, whichis to be ingested when one isparticipating in strenuous activity. It contains three crucial ingredients:water, sugars (carbohydrates),and salts (electrolytes). The Body Without Replenishment Without replenishment, performance levels drop. This can be caused by simple situations such as muscle cramps, weakness, and minor dizziness.More serious scenarios such as hyponatremia, dehydration syndrome and heat stroke may also occur. The purpose of the substance is to act as a beverage that will boost the endurance and performanceof athletes. This is done by maintaining elements such as bodytemperature, blood glucose, water percentage, and sodium, potassiumand other electrolyte balance. Feedback loops are responsible for maintaining steady body state. When the body is working too hard (under stress from exercise) it is notable to maintain proper feedback loop operationas all the energy is going towards exercise. Effects of Gatorade on the Body The three main ingredients to Gatorade are electrolytes (sodium & potassium), carbohydrates (sugars), and water. These replace any important elements that are lost in sweat, and provide fuel for the body. Electrolytes: Sodium & Potasium Water Carbohydrates: Sugars Electrolytes are minerals that include sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium. They are vital to ones health. They are responsible for making muscles and nerves work, as well as regulating heartbeat and maintaining proper volume of body fluids. Sodium and potassium are the two electrolytes in Gatorade. While these are lost through sweat, which occurs during exercise as the body attempts to control its temperature, they are regained through Gatorade. They work together to stimulate muscle contractions, preventing cramps and weakness. Sodium also improves the rate of absorption, so the body replenishes water faster. When exercising, fluids are lost through sweat. The body needs to stay hydrated, and drinking water is the way to do so. Without water, body fluid levels change, and the body temperature is affected. To add, it can cause heat exhaustion, heat stroke, muscle cramps, fatigue, and the breakdown of skeletal muscle. If as little as 1% of ones body weight is lost due to sweating, performance levels drop. Carbohydrates are sugars. They provide fuel that the body needs to function daily, specifically for muscle activity. When consumed during exercise, they will provide additional fuel and increase endurance capacity. Without these carbohydrates, one can feel depleted of energy, and without energy, cannot perform. The sugar adds flavourto the drink, motivating one to drinkmore regularly. Priya Gulyani
