The deterioration of the environment through depletion of resources such as air, water and soil; the destruction of ecosystems and the extinction of wildlife. Eutrophication the enrichment of an ecosystem with chemical nutrients, typically compounds containing nitrogen, phosphorus, or both. The most noticeable effect of eutrophication is algal blooms (long term effect). These cause algae to form in bodies of water. This prevents the aquatic plants from photosynthesizing, a process which provides oxygen in the water to animals that need it, like fish and crabs. Habitat Destruction Caused by farm run-off (nitrates and etc.) and factory wastes. changing the area in which a plant, animal, or other organism lives to the point the species can no longer survive. This can be caused by human activity (bull dozing, wetland filling, littering, etc.), tornadoes, fires, floods, & more. Can be prevented by sending pictures of suffering habitats to conservation centers, not littering, & properly ridding wastes. Invasive Species an organism (plant, animal, fungus, or bacterium) that is not native and has negative effects on our economy, our environment, or our health. an organism (plant, animal, fungus, or bacterium) that is not native and has negative effects on our economy, our environment, or our health. Kudzu, a Japanese vine species invasive in the southeast United States, growing in Atlanta, Georgia. It gows over tall trees and grasses. Mowing, herbicides, and conservation grazing are prevention measures for this invasive species. May vary for certain plant types. Soda Lake A soda lake or alkaline lake is a lake on the strongly alkaline side of neutrality (in other words, a pH value above 7, typically between 9 - 12). This is Soda Lake, in San Bernardino County, California. The water has evaporated leaving alkaline evaporites of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate. Soda lakes occur naturally throughout the world, typically in arid and semi-arid areas and in connection to tectonic rifts like the East African Rift Valley.
