British were shocked by how close they were and reacted in an overconfident way, attacking the unarmed men. 3. Colonel William Prescott, who led the troops,advised the Americans, "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes!" 4. The British attacked the Americans three times. Despite the fact the Americans were ill-equipped, they put up a strong fight and the British suffered heavycasualties during the first two attacks. 5. During the third attack, the British overran the American troops and forced them into retreat, winning the battle. 7.The Bunker Hill monument was built in Massachusetts in order to honor this battle and commemorate the first major conflict between British and Americans in the Revolutionary War. The chain of events that led up to the battle, occured during, and resulted in afterward. 6. Although the Americans lost, they left with a stronger morale. For them, this battle served to show how important patriotic dedication was.
