Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee Five Star Rating By the Best Book Reviewrs in NYC To Kill A Mockingbird takes place in Maycomb, a small town located in the heart of Alabama. The time period was the 1930s, and the Great Depression was in full swing. To Kill A Mockingbird is told through the eyes of Jean Louise "Scout" Finch, the daughter of the town lawyer, Atticus Finch, and the brother of Jem Finch. She is also good friends with Dill, a boy who travels to Maycomb every summer. Scout gets into fights, is a bit of a tomboy, but is unusually smart for her age. The fact that she is thoughtful, reliable, and trustworthy are the main reasons why she is my favorite character. The three children, Scout, Jem, and Dill, had fun over the summer making up stories their neighbor, Aurther "Boo" Radely. Some of the citizens of Maycomb made up some rumors about Boo Radely, stating that he was a crazy, old man with yellow teeth that spent his days eating squirrels. I feel that that was not very nice of people to make thing up about someone when you don't even know the person. I agree with Atticus because he asks, how can you judge someone if you haven't even met them? In this story, Atticus was always one to fight for whats right, even if he knew he was going to lose, so when a black man named Tom Robinson, was accused of raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell, he sided with Tom. During the Great Depression, blacks and whites did NOT mix, so when Atticus chose to support Tom, Scout narrates how she and her family were accused of being "nigger-lovers".These jurors did not even listen to Atticus, but were only thinking about the horrible black guy who obviously raped this poor little white girl. Personally, I feel that it is unfair that the jury of the Tom Robinson trial was made completely up of racist white jurors. In the end, Tom Robinson was shot after trying to escape the jail justice had placed him in. Atticus had embarrassed Bob Ewell during the trial so Bob attacked Scout and Jem. Luckily, Boo Radely came out of the darkness to save the children. TWEET:TKAM is a MUST READ BOOKwith a dramatic story line that will shake you to your core. #TKAM2k14 FOUR QUOTES STRAIGHT FROM THE BOOK: "Street lights winked down the street all the way to town. I had never seen our neighborhood from this angle. There were Miss Maudies, Miss Stephaniesthere was our house, I could see the porch swingMiss Rachelshouse was beyond us, plainly visible. I could even see Mrs.Duboses.." Scout is saying this in her mind. She is surprised at how much you can see through the shutters of the Radely Property. Scout realizes that Boo Radely could see everything from this window too, and that he was pretty much just a bystander, watching everything that went on in Maycomb. About the Author: Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926 in Monroeville, Alabama. "To Kill A Mockingbird" is Harper Lee'sfirst novel. It won the Pullitzer Prize in 1960. ...Will you take me home?... This is Aurther Radely talking toScout. He is asking her to walk him home because he is afraid of walking home due to the fact that he has spent so much of his life indoors and he is unfamiliar with being outside. This quote from the book shows Scout telling Mr. Raymond, her teacher, that there is a major extremity between whites and blacks. She says that cheating a black man is worse than cheating a white man because of how hard life already is for blacks. "...'Atticus says cheatin a colored man is ten times worse than cheatin a white man, I muttered. Says its the worst thing you can do.'..." "... I never loved to read. One does not love breathing..." This quote from the book shows Scout stating that she doesn't love reading because it comes naturally to her. She is verifying that by asking herself if she loves breathing.
