Médecins Sans Frontières, or Doctors without Borders when translated to English The main goals/missions of the organization are to prioritize the welfare of less fortunate individuals in war-torn/developing regions of the world, without discrimination of race, religion,or any other personal viewpoints. description here When and where was it formed? What caused (i.e. event, issue, crisis) the organization to be created? During the Nigerian Civil War of 1967 to 1970, a number of French doctors in accordance with the French Red Cross volunteered to work in hospitals and feeding centres. After entering the country, the volunteers were subjected to attacks by the Nigerian army. The doctors criticized the Nigerian government, and then concluded that a new aid organization was needed to prioritize the welfare of victims. Formed in France/Nigeria in 1971. Doctors without borders operates in over 70 countries worldwide, including Central African Republic, Afghanistan, Syria, etc. These specific countries require the assistance of doctors without borders because they are in need. For example, Central African Republic needs their assistance because of the the fact that there is an armed conflict epidemic access to health care natural disaster. To relate to a current event, Ebola is spreading. Therefore the assistance of doctors is needed. What actions does the organization take to achieve its goals? Prior to opening a lengthy project, Doctors Without Borders must see if the situation falls under the categories which it helps in. For example, Doctors Without Borders will work in conflict zones, after natural disasters, during epidemics, and in long-term care settings. Unfortunately if there is a situation doesnt fall under a category which they offer, they cannot commit to opening a project. Finally, if they have a current project which is getting out of hand, they can choose whether or not to continue dealing with it or to hand it over to an organization which is more suitable.
