Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 Many question the reason of why there is such a large gap in Connecticut. Recent studies show that some factors occur outside of a school's campus, including; poverty, unstable housing, institutional racism and CRIME RATES within a community. The numbers below represent the crime rate per 1,000 residents. Connecticut Median2.83 Bridgeport, CT12.05 Only 60% of lowincome students graduate from High School. Throughout the years, Connecticut has had one of the largest achievement gap in all of America. These numbers represent the achievement gap in American schools which are demonstrated by students taking a test where they can score on a scale from 0 to 500. These numbers on this graph represent the difference in the average scores between whites and blacks. Note: this graphic was done based upon data recorded in 2007. Where as 86%of non-incomestudents graduatefrom High School. Greenwich Officials recognize the issue and are trying to create solutions: We are not satisfied with the quality of education we are providing, particularly to our low-income Latino and African-American students, and our other low-income students (Superintendent McKersie). One of the issues in Greenwich is that non-minority families do not feel a responsibility to move their children to non-neighborhood schools in order to help even-out the racial composition. Greenwich residents argue that their homes were bought based on the neighborhood school their child would attend and it is unfair to force their children out of the school to improve others quality of education. Why is it important to close the gap? -Equality of opportunity and upholding the nations principles and ideals of equality-With a better quality education and a better academic understanding, children or more prepared for a career and supporting themselves independently It is important for schools and families to work together with the state government to close the gap. "If the policies and programmatic changes in this report are implemented (better living conditions, safer communities, number of absences decreased, economic stability within families, more teachers educated about the gap and willing to work with students to fix it, positive and safe learningcenters), methodically and with fidelity over the next seven years, it is anticipated that the achievement gap will close and opportunity will open" (Achievement Gap Task Force). Government Mandate on Racial Composition in schools: State law says that no schools nonwhite enrollment can deviate from the districtwide average for schools with the same grade levels by more than 25 percentage points. The graph on the left shows the gap in 8th grade level reading throughout the years 1992-2007 between whites and minorities. It represents how the difference in levels of reading between the two has remained relatively large for about 15 years. FACT: $2,000 to $4,000 more per student is spent in these racially imbalanced schools, in addition to any federal aid given to schools with high-needs populations, evidence of their attempt to help.
