Stem cells for hematopoietic cell transplant comes from 1 of 3 sources:1) Bone Marrow2) Perpipheral Blood (the blood that circulates throughout your body)3) CORD BLOOD (or the blood that comes from the umbilical cord At this point, stems cells from thecord blood are thought to be the best because it is more"versatile"than the other two options. Why? Because cord blood isimmature, it tends to have "lesslikelihood of an adverse reaction"with the recipients cells. This meansthe stem cells from cord blood areeasier to match from donor to recipient. Sometimes, however, the stem cells from the cord blood takelonger to ENGRAFT, or settle into the recipient's body, than thosefrom bone marrow or peripheral blood cells. During this time, the body is at risk for infection. Because cord bloodcells do not yield a high number of stem cells, the donations ofthis particular type of cell works best in children. However, a lot of research hasbeen conducted for this type ofbone marrow transplant, especially by Dr. Delaney of theSeattle Cancer Care Alliance. Some recent breakthroughs of hersare increasing the number of stemcells available in a single cord bloodsample, and also using two stem cellsamples, each from a different donor, into one recipient to increase thenumber of stem cells they receive.
