Invention of inflatable, rubber bicycle tubes in 1887 and the growing popularity of the automobile dramatically increased the global demand for rubber. Did all people and places involved in making and trading of these objects benefit? NO An example is King Leopold II of Belgium who turned Congo into its private colony between 1885 and 1908. Under his control, Congo became a labor camp of shocking brutality. He created an empire based on terror to harvest rubber. Families were held as hostages, starving to death if the men failed to produce enough wild rubber. Children's hands were chopped off as punishment for late deliveries. They were using them as slaves and were murdering them or their families if they didnt want to collect any rubber for the Europeans. How did the this shape Africas history? When the Industrial Revolution was booming in Europe, they found Africa to be the home of manycrucial raw materials. Many European countries like Britain, France, Germany and many more, colonized Africa. The political impacts that the colonialism left in Africa were both positive and negative. Europe Africa First, the colonial powers introduced an efficient system of administration in the country. It gave Africa a more structured political system and organized government. Westerners also introduced political concepts like constitution and democracy. They also brought in the idea of nationalism, which is what caused many wars and revolutions in Africa. The main economic effect of colonialism in Africa was the start of the industrial technology. The colonists developed industrialization of many of the African countries but they also took advantage of these colonies by exporting raw materials as cheap as possible and selling them at high prices. All of these effects had huge role in shaping the African culture. The wars that came along with the Imperialism left deep scars in the nation, causing racial barriers and social distinctions. The brutality of the Imperialist against African labourers is unmentionable and can not be outweigh by the modern ideas and concepts that the westerners had brought to Africa.
