Those living in public housing do feel slightly better off as they are protected from private rental costs. While Hong Kong's gross domestic product per head is high at $32,000, the disparity between rich and poor is wide and has become a political flashpoint. More than half of the population earn less than HK$11,000 a month and household incomes have barely increased over the past 10 years despite a booming economy.
