Peter Sis Books Awards Did you know? Peter Sis was born in Czechoslovakia on May 11, 1949. Czechoslovakia was a part of the Communist Russian Bloc. After college, Peter becamefamous for his short films and animation work. He was sent to Los Angles to cover the 1984 Olympics as a part of the Czech film crew. The project was cancelled and Sis made the difficult choice to stay behind, claiming asylum. Illustration work was difficult to find, but he made a living doing animation for MTV and teaching art classes. Soon, he was discovered at a conference and he was able to become a paid book illustrator, startingwith strictly illustrating and eventually moving into writing and illustratinghis own books. Maurice Sendak is credited for helping Peter Sis get his "big break" into children's literature. Sendak introduced Sis to his publisher friend who agreed to allow Sis to illustrate George Shannon's book Bean Boy. His next job was illustrating Sid Fleischman's novel The Whipping Boy, which won the Newbery Medal in 1985. 1987 Rainbow Rhino1991 Follow the Dream: The Story of Christopher Columbus1993 Komodo!1993 A Small Tall Tale from the Far Far North1994 The Three Golden Keys1996 Starry Messenger: Galileo Galilei1998 Tibet: Through the Red Box1999 Trucks, Trucks, Trucks2000 Madlenka2001 Madlenka's Dog2003 The Tree of Life: A Book Depicting the Life of Charles Darwin, Naturalist, Geologist and Thinker2004 Train of States2007 The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Books for the Year 1987, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994Boston-Globe Horn Book Award 1993, 1994, 2008Caldecott Honor Books 1997, 1999, 2008Robert Sibert Medal 2008
