This connection to school was also measured in the pre and post surveys where 84% Furthermore, another significant impact of the community service experience is expanded career pathway choices for the involved students. Students who make the connection between their education and their future career are less likely to drop out of school and more likely to transition to fulfilling careers. For some, participation in buildOn has illuminated the importance of school and the value of education. Other students also stated that buildOn provided them with the opportunity to acquire and develop new skills and attributes such as leadership, confidence, and communication. Both qualitative and quantitative data reflects the positive impact of buildon program has on student connection to school. This connection to school was also measured in the pre and post surveys where 84% of buildOn participants had a positive outcome in academic engagement indicating an increased connection to their school community. In examining, post survey results, one of the most significant positive changes in response from beginning of the year was regarding the response I care about my school. Students connectedness was further illustrated in responses which stated that they were participating more in class activities, getting along better with their classmates, and doing better in school. Additionally, a similar result of school connectedness was evident when examining the results in relation to years of involvement with buildOn. In this analysis, the highest mean changes was in caring about doing the best they can in school after just one year of being involved with buildOn. The pre and post surveys were also used to investigate whether the number of service hours students contributed through buildOn affected the result of the students connection to school. For students who contributed 25-50 hours of service displayed high mean changes in paying attention in class. There were significant high mean changes for students contributing more than 50 service hours in doing the best they can school and making contributions to the class items. Thus, it is evident that a consistent involvement with buildOn creates the conditions for significant positive increases in the student outcomes of academic engagement. But now I am learning cause I enjoy learning, and it opened my eyes to understand that not everyone in the world is fortunate and now I am pushing myself to get more learning opportunities like write resumes and stuff, and go to City College, and take courses and learn more.
