Nike continues partnering with high-profile athletes spending $909 million on athete endorsements this year, up from in 2013 up from $856 million in 2012. ECONOMIC FACTORS IN INDONESIA CULTURAL FACTORS IN INDONESIA ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS IN INDONESIA One of the rare advantages of the Nike sweatshops in Indonesia is that the job brings a regular wage, with free or subsidised meals, free medical services and training and education to its employees. Another advantage that was introduced in 1998 after a lot of controversy was the Nike code of conduct. The Code of Conduct included a minimum base wage (as set in the host country), maximum mandatory working hours of 60 per week, a ban on forced labour and minimum safety and environmental standards. However, kids being forced to work overtimeforced to work in crowded and polluted factories, often workers are being exposed to harmful chemicals approximately 177 times more than what is considered a safe level. Bosses of the factories work with or are associated with the Mafia to push workers harder with punishment often being either whipped, beat, killed, threatened at gun point, and/or have their house rant sacked. SOCIAL IMPACTS IN INDONESIA Nike has 43 sweatshops in Indonesia which is providing secureemployment for over 160,000 Indonesian people, with a pay rateof 5 times that of the average for the country. however; in saying this, the people working in these factories get a mere $1.25 a day, that is just 15c an hour. Nike claims that it provides money for their workers education and also the disadvantage people of Indonesia. What they didn't tell you was that they have only given $100,000 to the education system and $150,000 to the disadvantaged since 1998. Nike is paying Tiger Woods enough money that every second he could buy a house in the slums of Indonesia. This indicates that Nike is giving the bare minimum tothis country to help with obvious problems throughout third world countries. 1986 Nike revenues surpass $1 billion for the first time Did you know? NIKE - JUST DO IT. 1963-1964, Bill Bowerman and Phil coach joined forces to import low cost, high tech running shoes from japan in order to provide alternatives to the German-dominated athletic shoe market. 2014- Nike owns over 750 stores world wide Nike however looks to conserve the Indonesian environment by recycling excess rubber from factories, converting to water-based solvents which removes the toxicity. They also recycle used shoes. Nike decided to convert to making their tank tops made out of 75 per cent recycled plastic making this extremely environmental friendly. However in saying this Nike continues to burn scrap materials in local villages affecting the village and polluting the air in which the villagers live in. Vegetation is also removed for factories destroying local wildlife. REVENUE Nike often looks to special festivals, events and campaigns to create hype about the new products being produced. These special events somewhat have the Indonesian culture intertwined however, this leads to the ethical and moral views not being considered but more of the corporate interests that start to determine what is celebrated and how is it celebrated. Another negative impact the multinational corporation Nike has on the Indonesian cultural is that the government has very little control over the company and therefore is unable to dictate how the operate and also if they comply with the same rules and regulations as the domestic companies are under. This loss of power then changes the culture of the factories to more of an Americanised culture. Nike is one of the most well known multinational corporation in the world with more than 700 stores world wide and bringing in millions of dollars of revenue each year. However in saying this, Nike's manufacturing plants in developing countries such as Indonesia unfortunately bring down the company's reputation. Many factors such as economic, social, environmental and cultural contribute to Nike's bad reputation. For example economically Nike is payingTiger Woods enough money that for every second he buy a house in the slums of Indonesia. This indicates Nike is giving the bare minimum to this country to helpwith ongoing problems throughout third world countries.Along with economical factors, social factors are also amajor contributor. This is evident with the workers beingforced to work in very poor and dangerous conditions including being exposed to harmful chemicals 177 times the legal limit. Workers can also be punished for not working hard enough. As well as economic and cultural factors there is also environmental and cultural factors thatcontribute to the bad reputation that Nike has accumulated over the years. In conculsion, due to the reasons above and stated to the left Nike has a negative impact in developing countries like Indonesia.
