This is because, in the 1940s, the Afrikaners National Party become stronger and had gained power in the government. They made apartheid to take control of the economics and the social systems in South Africa. In 1948, apartheid laws were approved and racial discrimination was kept in place. For example, a marriage between a black South African and a white South African was not aloud. There were white only jobs. Mandela thought this wasnt fair to the black South African in South Africa. So then, he wanted to fight for change for his right, and the countrys right. Marriage Work at Central bank! He wanted black South Africans, commonly in the South Africa, to be treated equally like the white South Africans. The government did this so they could take control of the economics and social systems but mainly so the white South Africans can rule over and enlarge racialseperations. This means that they wanted to spread racial separations so the white South Africans could get more power and their ranks in South Africa will become higher.Mandela didn't like this law. He wanted fairness amongst all South Africans. Mandela joined ANC (African National Congress) to fight for change. He then begins the ANCYL (Africans National Congress Youth League). He was elected National Volunteer-in-Chief for civil disobedience campaign against unjust laws in 1952. In 1960, 69 people, including children, are killed and 200 people are injured. The 18000 protesters got arrested and the ANC was banned. He travels to other parts of Africa and Europe and gets arrested for illegal travels and strikes. He also gets arrested for ANC leaders. Mandela gets imprisoned in Robben island. While he is imprisoned, the ANC talks to the government and protests about the apartheid system. After being released from prison, Mandela was rewarded with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. He then gets elected at the election as president. Mandel created change over time in different groups. As a result, that brought him to being the 1st black president in South Africa and to stop the law of apartheid. He did this by doing illegal things like strikes and protesting. Gandhi and Mandela both first protested at South Africa and experienced the same things and got affected the same way. They also did not use violence. Mandela joined a group of people to protest to give power with words and action but not by himself with violence. Gandhi, when he started to protest, he told everyone not to use passive resistance which meant that he wanted to use words to fight and not violence. They both fought in groups. They are not afraid to be put in prison for breaking laws for the country. They both gave speeches to the government. They both wanted to become a lawyer so maybe the feeling of wanting to fight against the unfair laws came from there. Mandela took his time to change the laws. He used time to give power to his words. He repeated protesting to make people think that it was ok to protest about laws you think are unfair. He was brave and all this lead to stopping apartheid as a result. It took him about 50 years to change the world in South Africa. The government of South Africa didnt like his actions so they put him in jail. They didnt like him for going against the laws. But African people started joining in Nelson Mandels protests and that means they thought what Mandela thought too, that they didnt like the laws. Indian people probably felt the same since Gandhi, when he came to South Africa, he first fought for his own right. So Indian people thought the same as Mandela too. Other people around the world felt the same way since they said they think that he is determined and a true leader in Africa and love him. But the American government first thought Mandela was a terrorist until 2008. Afterwards, they have responded respectfully to Mandela's death so you could see that they have changed what they were thinking. How did Nelson Mandela activist create change?
