Nearly 1 in 10 Hispanic older adults live in overcrowded housing, as opposed to an average of 1 in 50 in the general population. The poverty rate of Hispanic older adults is nearly 17.9%,which is twice that of the total U.S. 65+ population. Hispanic older adults currently make up 7% of the US older adult population. By 2020, Hispanic representation will nearly triple to 20%. Policy Practice Research National Hispanic Senior Medicare Patrol (NHSMP) - Advocacy Salud y Bienestar - Vacunemonos - Act Against AIDS Leadership Initiative Housing Communities Promoting Communities of Success - Empowerment and Civic Training NHCOA hosts regional events to educate the Hispanic older adult community on the civic process, help them understand broad policy issues, and uncover the specific issues impacting their regions. Over the past 3 years, Promoting Communities of Success regional meetings have convened over 1,800 leaders across Florida, Texas, and California. NHCOA's Medicare outreach programs havedirectly impacted 1,100 older adults in Texas and Florida, with an extended reach of 3,300 family members, caregivers, and close friends. Over 80% of Hispanic older adults have at least one chronic condition, compared to less than 75% of the general population. NHCOA educates and informs Hispanic older adults on how to prevent and manage diabetes, ensures they have access to life-saving vaccinations, trains them on HIV/AIDS prevention, and provides information on health literacy. Located in Garden City, KS and Washington, D.C., NHCOA offers affordable housing at two low-income facilities,each providing 40 high-quality apartments for Hispanic older adults. NHCOA advocates for the strengthening of Social Security and the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act, and developed the NHSMP, the only culturally and linguistically appropriate tool to close the gap in Medicare fraud education.
