Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 Children's Rights By: Maria Waters Child Soliders Convention on the Rights of the Child Under international law, the participation of children under 18 in armed conflict is generally prohibited, and the recruitment and use of children under 15 is a war crime. Such children are robbed of their childhood and exposed to terrible dangers and to psychological and physical suffering. They are placed in combat situations, used as spies, messengers, porters, servants or to lay or clear landmines. Girls in particular are at risk of rape and sexual abuse. Juvenile Life Without Parole There are at least 2,500 people in the US serving life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for crimes committed when they were under 18 years old. The United States is believed to stand alone in sentencing children to life without parole. These standards recognize that, however serious the crime, children, who are still developing physically, mentally, and emotionally, do not have the same level of culpability as adults and require special treatment in the criminal justice system appropriate to their youth and immaturity. Right to Education Children across the world miss out on their education because: they are made to work, they are recruited into armed forces, their families do not have the means to pay for schooling, discrimination and racism undermine their chance to receive an education, and they face violence as they pursue their education. Girls are more likely to be excluded from school than boys when there isn't enough money to go round. One of the Convention's key strengths is that it recognizes that rights must be actively promoted if they are going to be enforced- awareness is not enough. This Convention is the first international treaty to guarantee civil and political rights as well as economic, social, and cultural rights. Children all across the world are denied their human rights. Children are abandoned and left to fend for themselves on the streets. They are subjected to the death penalty, are disappeared, are punished by cruel and inhumane methods and suffer many other forms of violence.
