After four months, she was finally brought to the US, and was caught by immigration officials. The traffickers freed her, but increased her debt. She began to work 7 days a week, paid only in tips. Luckily, she met a nonprofit immigration lawyer who helped her apply for a "t" visa. In the midst of the crisis in their home country, there are millions of Syrians needing protection. The Gulf States, Russia, and China have refused to place refugees. The EU will place only 0.17% of refugees. The influx of Syrian refugees has increased Lebanon's population by 26%. In June 2013, the US Senate passed the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act. Syrian Refugees An estimated 200 million people live outside the country in which they were born - about 3% of the global population of 6.5 billion. There are an estimated 14.2 million refugees in the world, roughly 0.21% of the world's population. The majority of refugees andIDPs are in Asia and Africa, which between them host a total of 9.2 million refugees and 18.1 million IDPs The numbers of internally displaced persons are currently estimated to be around 24.5 million - 0.4% of the world's population.
