Kennedy, Victim The Ride The Ride 22 November 1963 at 12:30 p.m.Dealey Plaza in Dallas, TX JFK, much unlike all his security, loved open-toplimos because itallowed the public to see him as much as possiblewhile he campaignsfor reelection. In the limo with JFK satthe lovely First Lady,Jacqueline (Jackie) Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson (V.P. who later becomes Pres. after Kennedy) and his wife, andthe governor of TX with his wife, among other officials and security. The President's Dream JFK was youngest President, elected into office in 1961. His presidency was thought of as a golden age by most Americans at the time. After all, after WWII, the U.S. became a world superpower with a strong economy. However, at this time, the Cold War was also happening. People saw Kennedy as a beacon of hope for America. Kennedy had a lot of things on his presidential to-do-list, such as ending communism’s spread throughout the world, ending the production of harmful nuclear weapons, sending astronauts to the moon, lowering taxes, providing health care, and supporting the Civil Rights Movement by promoting equal treatment for all races. The first shot fired at Kennedy turned out to be a miss. The next shot, however, passed through Kennedy’s neck and hit the governor of TX. The governor did not die, butmade a full recovery. Another shot rang out, hitting JFK directly in the head, and Kennedy was slumped over onto the shocked Jackie Kennedy. Secret Service reacted quickly, shielding the Kennedys with their own bodies. What Happened The driver raced to the nearest hospital at high speeds of around 80 miles an hour. Back in Dealey Plaza, everyone was in a shocked frenzy. After only 30 minutes, over two thirds of the U.S. had heard the terrifying news, which was extremely remarkable considering their lack of technology we have today. Our President was pronounced dead at 1:00 p.m. that Friday. People were in compete panic. Children were sent home from school. Businesses closed. Everyone knew the next headline for the evening edition. People suspected that the Soviets had planned all this out, and wondered if it might mean the start of a war. Everbody cheered loudly, snapping pictures, clappiing enthusiastically, and jabbing signs and posters that welcomed the President in the air as the car drove past them in the streets. Even though the Soviets were prime suspects for this heinous crime, it turned out to be a 24-year-old American named Lee Harvey Oswald. His childhood was very unsteady, growing up without a father and with an unstable mother, he had moved 21 times by the time he turned 17. When he was in 10th grade, he joined the Marines and became a skilled shooter. He thought of himself as a communist and lived in the Soviet Union for a while, which was where he met his wife before returning to the U.S. However, because of Oswald’s aggressiveness and tendency towards being hot-tempered, the marriage wasn't very happy. Oswald had worked for the past two months at the Texas School Book Depository, and on the sixth floor of this building, he shot President Kennedy on that fateful day. Historians believe the attack wasn’t planned until that day, when Oswald saw in the newspaper that Kennedy would be passing through, just outside of the windows in the Depository. After the shooting, Oswald went back to his apartment to change clothes and to grab a revolver. He left a few minutes after the president was pronounced dead (1:00 p.m.). Oswald was stopped by a police officer, Officer J.D. Tippit. Tippit thought Oswald fit the description of a person that witnesses had seen in the Depository window. Oswald panicked, and shot Tippit before fleeing. Soon, though, police found Oswald hiding in a movie theater. Oswald was pronounced dead at 1:07 p.m. at the same hospital Kennedy died in just hours before, without a confession to murdering the President. Oswald’s death sparked a lot of conspiracy theories, however it has been proven in a 1964 investigation called the Warren Commission that he definitely did act as one. Kennedy’s death ended an era of optimism and peace. After his death, his brother, Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr. were also assassinated. The Vietnam war took over 58,000 American lives, and the Cold War got more intense. A number of laws that Kennedy had been pushing were passed under the presidency of LBJ. LBJ created Medicaid and Medicare and passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Later, American astronauts walked on the moon! President Kennedy will always be in our memories. At his grave, an eternal flame burns on and on. Ask your family who was alive when JFK was shot. They will always remember exactly what they were doing the day our President was killed. At about 2:00 p.m., Kennedy’s body was placed on a plane headed for Washington, D.C. Before the plane left, Jackie Kennedy stood next to LBJ as he was sworn in to office. She was still wearing her suit with stains from her husband’s blood as reporters broadcasted her picture across the country. She did not resist. She wished to be seen by the public so that everyone would remember the tragic day. The next morning, Jackie prepared for the funeral of her beloved husband. The memorial could possibly be one of the grandest ever seen in the country. Over 250,000 people came. Before the funeral, though, police in Dallas escorted Oswald to the County Jail through a wall of journalists when a man pushed through the crowd and shot Oswald. 4 4 After?
