Muhammad was born in about 570 CE in the Arabian city of Mecca. At an early age he was brought up under the care of his paternal uncle Abu Talib. When he was about 12 years old, he accompanied Abu Talib on a trade journey to Syria.Soon later he married Khadija, had 7 children but one daughter Fatima, survived.Muhammad is a prophet and received Prophet hood in the cave of Hira on Jabal-al-Noor. In the year 610 C.E., the angel Gabriel appeared to Muhammadand called him to Prophethood. According to the Qur'an, Muhammad was instructed to answer that he wassent only as a warner. Around 612, Muhammad gained many followers from Mecca. Other people who werent ready to give up their many godsrejected him and ordered a boycott of his ideas. Muhammad describedriding a winged horse on a night journey to Jerusalem and the 7 levels of Heaven, where he met Jesus, Abraham and Moses. The people in Medina invited Muhammad to live there. Eventually, Muhammads followers won battles and conquered the holy city of Makkah. They (people in Makkah) respected Jewish and Christian people as people of the book.In his Last Sermon, Muhammad saidbe faithful and treat each other well. Quran and Sunnah is a saying attributed to Muhammad (a hadith), namely I have left among you two matters by holding fast to which, you shall never be misguided: the Book of God and my Sunna. It is an often quoted saying regarding the sources of Islam. The authenticity of this hadith isrejected by many Shi'a. The concept itself is not rejected, as most Muslims hold that Islam is derived from two sources: one being infallible and containing compressed information the Qur'an and another being a detailed explanation of the everyday application of the principles established in the Qur'an: The Sunnah, or the living example of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.
