He is defending Tom Robinson, a blackman accused of rapeagainst a white women. Jake is a lawyer defending a blackman, Carl Lee,in court. He has one daughter. Both lawyers, who are white, are defending a black man in the South. The few black in the jury for Carl Lee's case gottaken off. It was assumed that white people would vote for people of their own race. Jake, his wife, and his daughter get called n- lovers. The whole family gets called offensive terms for defending a black man. The children in both the novel and the movie get bullied in school because of their fathers actions. Both cases were believed to be lost before they evenstarted. Before the case began, the jury had a meeting and decided that Carl Lee would lose the trial. Atticus, Scout and Jem all getcalled n- lovers. There was an all white jury at the trial of Carl Lee. A clan of people against Atticus's case meet him at the town jail, and threatened to kill Tom Robinson and hurt Atticus. The KKK burn down Jake's house, shoot and murder Ethel's husband, take Ellen hostage and lock her up outside, attemptto shot Jake and protest outside going to court. Jake's secreatatys husband was murdered, so she beleives that they have already lost the case, even if the trial had not yet begun. "You are my secret weapon because you are one of the bad guys. You don't mean to be but you are. It's how you was raised." -Carl Lee White people have more rights than black people and will do anything to keep it that way. “As you grow older, you'll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don't you forget it - whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who heis, how rich he is, or howfine a family he comes from, he is trash.” -Atticus Finch Bob Ewell is a man who dislikes black people, so, sinceAtticus is defending Tom Robinson, he spits in his face to prove a point. White people do not see the point of bringing the cases to court. The lawyers defending the black man are getting treated harshly andwith a lack of respect. Throughout both the novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Leeand the film, A Time to Kill, it is clearly seen that blacks are treatedunfairly and unequally in comparison to whites. Whites seem to believe that they are superior, and this lead them to think that they can treat blacks disrespectfully, and as if they have no worth. They tend to treat whites who support blacks with that same disrespect. People strongly against the blacks and their trials are teaming up on those trying to defend them. These clansare protesting against thesecases going to court, becausethey do not see the valuein the life of black men. By: Sarah Daniels and Lauren Hussey Atticus says that he knows that the case will lose, but he thinks that Tom Robinson is an innocent man and deserves a fair trial. Mayella Ewell lied to the jury about the fact that her dad was the one who raped her, not Tom Robinson. The doctor lies about Carl Lee not being insane at the time of the shooting. Both white people in the trials are lying to make their side more believable. They think that since they are white, and believe they are better than theblacks, they can get away with lying.
