Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 History Timeline of Syria History Timeline of Syria 1936 1939 World War 2 broke out. Syria was on the French and British Forces hoping to get full independence. I think that this led to the Civil War because they wanted to get full independence to do what they want. Franco-Syrian Treaty World War 2 The Franco Syrian Treaty was signed in Paris. It gave Syria partial independence. I think that this lead to the Civil War because they probably wanted more independence. Independence Day 1946 On April 17, 1946, the last French troops left Syria. This day was declared as National Independence Day. I think this led to the Civil War because they finally got full independence and they thought they could do what they wanted. 1963 Amin al-Hafez became president of Syria in 1963. I think this led to the Civil War because Syria finally got a leader so he had to make laws and take care of the people. A New Leader 1970 A New President Hafez al-Assad became the newly elected president of Syria for a 7-year term. I think this led to the Civil War because Syria got a new president and the people didn't know if he was going to be good or evil. 1973 At War Again After going to war again with Israel, Syria and Egypt lost the Golan Heights. I think this led to the civil war because they probably wanted to have the Golan Heights. 1982 An Invasion Israel invaded Lebanon. Since Lebanon and Syria were allies, they fought back. The last tanks left in 1985. I think this lead to the Civil War because they thought that they kept on fighting small battles and kept on using the same weapons. 1980 Assissination A Muslim Brotherhood member tried to assassinate Assad. I think this led to the Civil War because the president had to toughen up. 1980 The dictator sent his troops to stop the rebellion. They also bombed the city of Hama, killing about 10,000 people. I think this led to the Civil War because it was the first bombing and they thought if the rebellion never stopped they would do it again. The First Bombing 1994 Surely The Next President Bassel al-Assad was sure to be the next president of Syria, but he died in a car crash. So his younger brother, Bashar al-Assad, was called back to Syria to become the new president. I think this lead to the Civil War because maybe Basher al-Assad did not want to become president. 2000 A New Leader in Charge Bashar al-Assad is elected president. People looked at him as a "mommy's boy." He was nicknamed Baby Bashar. He wanted to follow in his father's dictatorship, so he ruled with an iron fist. I think this lead to the Civil War because he is the dictator and he started the war. 2002 Evil? Syria was added to a list of countries called the "axis of evil." The U.S. claimed that Syria was seeking information of chemical weapons. I think this lead to the Civil War because since they were called evil, and they got mad.
