Everyone wanted a new system. 19th Century While the western world industrialized, Russia stayed rural with few factories. The same Romanov family has been ruling for centuries.Change was necessary. After 1905, many revolutionaries abandoned the cause because of poverty, age, illness, or were in prison. Late 19th Century By July 1917, constant riots were breaking out against the czar while Germans were defeating the Russians on the eastern front. Lenin tried to take advantage of the situation but he was declared a German spy by the government and was shunned. He fled but vowed to return by September. Lenin dies on January 21, 1924 after a stroke. Stalin soon takes power of the Bolsheviks. Civillian revolts began so Nicholas appointed a parliament, the Duma. The people calmed down despite the fact that Nicholas ignored the Duma. This is the first sign of people wanting power. Russian soldiers run into battle with outdated guns. Russian Morale was at a new low. Recruited prisoners and peasants did not know what they were fighting for and were massacred by German technology. He did. The Bolsheviks were in power by October. The czar gave all power to the Duma which formed provisional governments. When Lenin came back he overthrew them with his supporters and started his to work through his communist agenda. Vladimir Lenin led the resistance against the current regime. He took control of the Russian Social Democrats that then split into two groups. Bolsheviks and Mensheviks. Lenin led the Bolsheviks.
