Luckily, he had an older brother, Lawrence, who took good care of him. When he was 16 he went to work as a surveyor, then later became the leader of the Virginia militia. After the French and Indian War Washington settled down and married the widow Martha Dandridge Custis. After his brother died, he took over the estate of Mount Vernon and they raised Martha's two children from her former marriage.
