VOC Formaldehyde is an organic compound that is known to be harmful to the environment, more specifically affecting humans. In fact, it was declared a toxic substance in 1999 by the Canadian Enviro-nmental Protection Act. Being commonly found in indoor environments, humans are constantly exposed to formaldehyde with common symp-toms being irritation of the sinuses and of the eyes. Formaldehyde is also regarded as a Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) which means that it has a low boiling point, allowing it to easily enter the atmosphere. Constant exposure to high concentrations of this compound could lead to serious health issues in animals, even resulting in death, and has been proven to cause leukemia in humans in the worst cases. Formaldehyde has been known to cause cancer in both humans and in animals. In 2011, the NationalToxicology Program confirmed that formaldehyde is a knowncause of some types of cancerincluding nasal cancer, and leukemia, but only after heavy exposure to the organic compound. Formaldehyde is used in inks to produce the dollarbills used in USA today as well as in othercomputer inks, books, newspapers, and magazines. This compound is also usedas an embalming fluid that can preserve human bodiesbut is more commonly used to preserve animals.
