According to the EPA, over 30 million tons of food are discarded every year in the USA. That's up to $100 billion wasted! $100 BILLION WASTED Dallas Zero Waste Plan seeks to make Dallas a Zero Waste City by 2040 but many buildings are currently not designed for such diversion goals. Chutes vs. Valet Service By designing for optimal waste diversion, your property could gain acompetitive advantage, attract more residents and exemplify how design can enable zero waste and enhanced sustainability. There are two design routes you can take... 1. Design a space for residents to easily separate their waste using different colored bags. For optimal recycling, we suggest four containers for single stream, organics, cardboard and organics. 2. Incorporate a chute that provides access to each floor for residents to drop their bags of waste into. 3. The chutes will lead to containers that will be serviced by the waste vendor directly. Pros: No additional cost to property management for trash valet attendant, easily accessible for residents, easily accessible for waste vendor Cons: Less convenient for residents since they must carry waste to chute opening on their floor, must reserve space in building for chutes, increase materials costs for chutes 1. Residents place each container outside of their door on their designated days. 3. Waste valet attendants collect residents' waste at their doorstep and take it down to the various containers that will be serviced by the waste vendor. Pros: Most convenient for residents, no additional space must be reserved, no additional design or materials costs Cons: Additional cost for property management for valet service, valet attendants may mix waste streams together which defeats recyclingefforts LEED Innovation Point LEED NC doesn't require that developers design for organic recycling. This means an opportunity for you to earn a point for Innovation in Operations and gets you onestep closer to earning your LEED Platinum Certification. RWI GREEN COULD LEAD THE WAY
