Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled. Today one in three children in America are overweight or obese. So how did we get here? Over the years, our lifestyles have changed. It has become easier for children to access things such as junk food. Also, we have gone from a society that walked everywhere, to one where the furthest we walk on average is the bathroom. With the lack of physical activity, you think we would have adjusted our eating patterns accordingly, however sizes of food and portions have on the contrast increased. What do we do now? Childhood Obesity Empowering Parents and Caregivers:Parents and caregivers play an important role in childhood obesity. Parents/caregivers are a role model for children to eat healthy and be active. Everyday choices can affect this. For example, taking the car a short distance to a destination instead of walking. That shows a child that riding in a car isbetter than walking. Also if the parent doesn’t exercise thenit doesn’t show importance to the child. These little life choices can make a big impact on children. Providing Healthy affordable foods:School is where children eat lunch everyday for 9 months. That means healthy foods there are very important. There has been many new laws that have banned unhealthy foods. For example, there aren’t any more deep fryers in schools. Also, there will be more laws that are to make schools healthier to come. Another way to become more healthier everywhere would be to make healthier foods less expensive and junk food more expensive. For example, you could put a bigger tax on junk food and then be able to lower the prices of healthier foods. Another way to accessing foods is to have healthier foods be at grocery stores and provide them at restaurants. Make a change in your child's life today! Exercising:Parents can lay down the law and make their children be moreactive. For example, set a time where they can be on electronics. Also, bring them to places where they will be active, like a swimming pool, a park, etc. Another easy way to get your children moving would be to exercise with them.
