Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 I create figurative sculpture that celebrates the strength and diversity of the Appalachian spirit. My goal as an artist is to create interesting and inspiring characters that are directly connected to the rich culture and heritage of West Virginia. For me inspiration is found around every corner. The beauty and realism of the Appalachian region provides powerful imagery for me to draw upon in my work. During my undergraduate program I waslucky enough to spend an ample amount of time traveling between Europe and Asia, and was able to explore the art from these inspiring cultures. As a sculptor I am constantly in awe by the figurative work produced during the Italian Renaissance, such as the work by Lorenzo Bernini. These experiences inevitably show through in my work by meshing a classical sculpture feel with historical West Virginian themes. In my studio I like to use traditional methods to produce my work. It is important for me to use these hands-on techniques so that I can stay true to artists that came before me. The, labor intensive, lost-wax process of bronze casting is my main media of choice. The freedom of clay allows me to create realistic figures that are able to come to life before my eyes. My work has often been described as serious, with an extraordinary level of detail. I am constantly working to improve my skills as an artist. Currently, I am working on a series of Mountain Men that will be available soon in bronze. My work is in private collections across North America, as well as on public display at the West Virginia State Capital Complex.
