Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 Things within the play appear to be true and honest but in reality are infested with evil. Many of the characters within the play hide behind a mask of falseness. Four of the maincharacters that hid behind this mask are Polonius, Rosencrantz (Guildenstern),the king Cluadius. From behind this mask they give the impression of a personwho is sincere and genuine, in reality they are plagued with lies and evil. There appearance will make it very difficult for Hamlet to uncover the truth, the characters hide behind. Appearance VS. Reality "O villain, villain, smiling damned villain! My tables. Meet it is I set it downThat one may smile, and smile, and be a villain" (I.v.106-8) "How does the Queen?She swoons to see them bleed." (V.ii.302-3) Do not believe his vows, for they are brokers,Not of that dye which their investments show, But mere of unholy suits, Breathing like sanctified and pious [bawds] The better to (I.iii.136-140) They appear to act one way whenthey are in the public eye; however,when they are alone their true colours may prevail and show their true nature. Hamlet is describing his Uncle Claudius. His uncle pretends to be this honestand trustworthy man but the reality is he is a spiteful villain. Claudius shows his true nature in this scene. In order to protect himself he let the Queen drink the poison. He could have prevented her death, but he was selfish and decided to do what was best for him. He appears to try and be a good King and husband even though he is responsible for the Queens death. In reality, Polonius is only looking out for himself because he does not want to be embarrassed by Ophelia relationship with Hamlet. Polonius appears to be a good man but in reality does not care aboutanybody else but himself.
