Concussions TBI's A TBI stands for "Traumatic brain injury." In 2010 about 2.5 billion emergency department visits, hospitalizations or deaths were associated with TBI's. TBI's are starting to become a problem. Every day 138 people in the US die from injuries that include TBI. How are athletes effected by this? In recent years scientists have found signs of an neurodegenerative disease called Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) in deceased athletes who were exposed to multiple impacts. It is also a proven fact that athletes who come from a history of multiple blows to the head are more inclined to developing Alzheimer's at an older age. The parts of the brain that are effected by concussions are the frontal lobes and the temporal lobes. These cognitive functions that these parts of the brain provide can be affected and even permanently injured if the injury is severe enough. Frontal lobes Temporal lobes This part of the brain influences personality, planning, initiating, and organizing. These types of features are considered "high-level" cognitive functions. The temporal lobes are involved primarily in memory functions and certain language functions. What arts of the brain are affected by concussions? How does technology effect concussions? More and more teenagers are staying inside due to new video game consoles. New technology in football helmets are made to be able to detect concussions earlier that most cases.
