If Lucas becomes unemployed? Without proper government support, Afia will choose to take shady job with the promise of money and educationfor her children. Instead, she is forced into the lucrative and vast human traffickingnetwork. She becomes one of the 20-30 million people who have lost lost their freedom to modern day slavery. Her kidsare left abandoned and must fend forthemselves. It is said this happens oncea day in African countries like Chad. The day Lucas becomes unemployed, he goes straight to his local government office where he files for unemployment benefits. According to the contract he signed, to get his benefits, he must actively look for work. So he decidesto go to a local technical college and become a electrician. He soon finds work and is able to send his kids to college. Afia's story is not uncommon. Chad has an unemployment rate of 22.6%. Many of thesepeople would be rural farmers, but do to protective tariffsand subsidies in Europe, who protect farmers like Lucas, Afia can't compete or make a profit. Employed: 77.4% Unemployed: 22.6% This is about 2 out of every 10 people If the subsidies and tariffs were removed, and Afia were to drive Lucas out of business, what would happen? Both Afia and Lucas would lead better lives in the long run.Although it might be difficult for Lucas in the beginning, he would still be able to feed his family with the stronggovernment safety net in place for him, and, eventually, hewould be able to find a new job to support his family. The decrease in subsidies and tariffs would lead to an increase incrop yields and the supply of food all around the world. Not only doesthis benefit the 870 million people around the world who are malnourished, but it also provides food security to future generations. Something that hasbeen a concern amongst credible journalists like Bill McKibben. Imagine having 8 out of every 8 people in the world full instead of having only 7 out of every eight people full. The increase in yields would decrease the dependance on pesticides and chemicalsused by European farmers. This would benefitthe environment and address concerns madeby environmentalists and journalists like Anna Lappe.
