Buford Highway is a linear community made up of multi-ethnic suburban neighborhoods and shopping centers. Along Buford Highway, there are few wholly distinct ethnic areas. The more than 1,000 immigrant-owned businesses are owned by and patronized by a wide variety of ethnic groups, notably Korean, Mexican, Chinese and Vietnamese, and also Indian/South Asian, Central American, Somalis and Ethiopian. Clarkston is a city in DeKalb County, it is noted for its ethnic diversity. In the 1990s refugee resettlement programs identified Clarkston as a good fit for displaced persons of many different backgrounds. The rental market was open, residents were moving farther out from the Atlanta urban core, and Clarkston was the last stop on a transit line into the city.
