While the Revolution of 1776-1783 created the United States, the Civil War of 1861-1865 determined what kind of nation it would be. How it happened? The war began when the Confederates bombarded Union soldiers at Fort Sumter, South Carolina on April 12, 1861. Civil War North South At the beginning of the war the Northern states had a combined populationof 22 million people. The Southern states had a combined population of about 9 million. The Civil War was America's bloodiest conflict. Roughly 1,264,000 American soldiers have died in the nation's wars 620,000 in the Civil War and 644,000 in all other conflicts The Civil War was fought in thousands of different places, from southern Pennsylvania to Texas; from New Mexico to the Florida coast. The majority of the fighting took place in the states of Virginia and Tennessee The war in 1861 cost the Federal government $50 million on food alone for its troops and a further $50 million on supplies to quartermasters’ departments. By the time the war ended the Federal government had spent $370 million on food alone and a further $678 million on supplies The North had social and political disillusionment on both sides fed economic greed One major impact was that the North got ridof slavery 1865, northern factories, banks, and cities underwent sweeping industrialization, heaping the United States emerge as a global economic power. One major impact that hurt the South the most was the destruction caused by the war. Most of the battlewas fought in the south and it got completlydestroyed The population in the South decreased by a lot The economy got affected because of the recoveringthat was needed from the war. Why did the North win? The North’s victory seems obvious, especially due to its major advantage in population and resources but the Confederates had several factors in their favor and the outcome of the war wasimpossible to predict. African Americans and the War With the Emancipation Proclamation, the Union moved from allowing black troops to actively recruiting them. African American leaders were asked to seek volunteers. By war's end, more than 180,000 Africans American volunteers had served in the Union military. The Confederacy considered drafting slaves and free blacks in 1863 and 1864 African American troops faced prejudice. They were usually assigned menial tasks, such as cooing, cleaning, or digging latrines. They often served the longest guard duty and were placed in exposedbattle positions. It took a three year effort to win equal pay The vast majority of women did not get close to military action, but many took over family businesses farms, or plantations. With so many men away at the front, women made inroads into professions that had previously been dominated by men. As a result the North won!
