Mohammed Zahir Shah is Afghanistan's last kingwho leads the countryduring a relativelypeaceful four decades. He is ousted by a coup ledby his cousins. General MohammadDaoud Khan becomesPrime Minister of Afghanistan and looks to communistcountries for assistance.He also introduces a newconstitution that allows women more freedom. He is murderedin a communist coup. Nur Mohammad Taraki, the leader of the Afghan Communist Party, takes control of the countryand establishes the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. Although he declares Afghanistan free ofSoviet influence, he stillsigns a friendship treaty with Soviet Russia. In the 1970s, Taraki and his Deputy PrimeMinister, Amin, enter into a power struggle and Tarakiis killed during a confrontationwith Amin's supporters. Widespread opposition to Karmal and USSRspawns violent publicdemonstrations Dr. Mohammad Najibullah, a puppet leader brought into power by the Soviets, rules Afghanistan until he isis ousted by the Mujaheedenafter they succesffullystorm Kabul. Burhanuddin Rabbani, a professor, is chosenby the Mujaheedin to leadthe new country and thusis named the new president. However, the Taliban soonrises to power and publicly executes him. Hamid Karzai is sworn inas the interim presidentwith the support of the UnitedStates.
