Political Difference Oceania Many civilizations in the New World were theocratic, meaning that their monarchs were thought to be gods New World Economic Similarity Oceania and theNew World wereboth agricultural societies Oceania's several different divisions were run by local chiefs The Māori chieftains of hapū werecalled "Rangatira." They were responsible for governing their respective tribe and maintaining their territory. Economic Difference New World Oceania Because it is comprised of several thousand islands, many civilizations in Oceania were seafaring, and traded between themselves in that region with the use of boats. Since the New World was largely just one big land mass, several different civilizations such as the Aztecs, Incas, and Toltecs were NOT sea-faring, and tended to trade with each other by land. The Aztecs built central, large marketplaces called Tianquiztli. Each smaller market specialized in various goods and services. Their boats were a type of canoe called an "outrigger canoe," and they were originally developed by the Austronesian-speaking peoples of several islands in Oceania as a means of transportation, fishing, and trade. Issues Both Oceania and the New World werefaced with limitations that hindered theirdevelopment. Oceania and the New World were isolated from other societies 1. 2. Both regions lacked domesticated animals While some civilizations in the Americas were able to domesticate the llama, farm animals that could be readily supplied for consumption such as pigs, cows, or goats could not be found in either Oceania or the New World. Indigenous peoples were therefore forced to rely more on hunting and gathering as a means for food, while other civilizations such as those in Europe and Asia had mastered animal agriculture and were able to increase their populations. The Aztec's monarch who took power in 1440 was called Montezuma. Montezuma actually allowed Cortes and his armies into their city thinking that they were gods themselves; unfortunately, Cortes overtook and conquered their civilization ? ? ? ? Geographic isolation from other areas of the world prohibited either society from engaging in global or European trade. Therefore, neither Oceania nor the New World were able to adopt advanced technologies, cultures, or economies. This setback instead led them to become underdeveloped as opposed to other civilizations at the time. Papua New Guinea in Oceania began practicing agriculture around 7,000 to10,000 years ago. Their native crops included banana, taro, sago, and yam. The Aztecs of the Americas would use areas called"chinampas" to grow native crops like corn, squash, avacado, tomato, and guava. Limitations of Oceania Limitations ofthe New World Oceania had very meager natural resources, and so oceanic societies could not become as advanced economically or develop as reliable of a food source as other areas of the world. This hindered their societal development more so than civilizations in the New World. Although the New World did not offer as great natural resources as Europe or Asia, the Americas grew a much wider variety of sustainable crops than Oceania. These crops could not advance their society to match the development of Europe, for example, but native Indians fared much better than the natives living in Oceania.
