In 1959, a law was passed that said only white people could vote. That way a white government could stay in power. Nelson Mandela tried to be peaceful. When he was convicted (with many others) in 1952, it was for staying out past curfew. He made many speeches. One of his most famous speeches is the one he made at the dock to Robinson Island, a prison. He said, He had a teachernamed Gandhi Nelson Mandela himself called Gandhi a "teacher" and "role model" Nelson Mandela learned civil disobediencefrom Gandhi, and taught others to becivilly disobedient. The outside world, after his famous speech from prison dock, made himthe symbol of resistance against apartheid. This was seen and heard world wide. It brought attentionto South Africa. The world started to try to end apartheid by boycotting South African goods, and startedbanning their sport teams. The government lost money, popularity, and allies. The government wrote in letters he was "sly," an "agitator," (stirring up trouble) and that he "cannot be trusted." His supporters thoughthe was a hero, rallying point and someone to look up to. "I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal, which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." "I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination.
