Created with Fabric.js 1.4.5 BurmesePython Python bivittatus Characteristics:Burmese Pythons can grow to over 20 ft, but are usually between 6 and 10 ft.They are tan with dark blotches along the back and sides. They have a pyramid shaped head with a dark arrowhead wedge extending to the nose. The Burmese Python generally likeliving in areas ranging 85-88°F.They generally like to be around water, sothey are very common in the Everglades and more swampy areas of the Southeast, but they are alsofound in forests and more woodsy areas. Burmese pythons are native to the jungles and grassy marshes of southeast Asia. Burmese Pythons have invaded the Everglades and have an estimated growing population of 30,000 to 300,000. They consume nearly any bird, mammal, and reptile, including nationally endangered species, such as the Key Largo woodrats and woodstorks. Several methods have been proposed to control the python population, but haveresulted in limited success. Dog searches, bounty hunters, and trapping have proved to be inefficient, as the environment hindersthe ability to detect the python's wide-ranging territory. Biocontrol, which uses avirus, bacteria, or parasite to infect a species, has been proposed, but was rejected due to the fragility of the Everglades ecosystem. While effective control methods have yet to be discovered, regulatorymeasures have been put in place. It is now illegalto import Burmese Pythonsand pet-owners are requiredto have permits and havetheir snakes tagged. Lisa Qu
