Physical Appearance This type of toothed whale is a large, dark gray, whale with a square head.Males are about 52 ft long and may weigh up to 45 tons.Females weigh about 36 ft and up to 15 tons. Endangered Human predation is the maincause for their extinction. Also, they are hunted for their spermaceti oil taken from an organ in their heads, the whales need them to go deep in the ocean. The oil can be used for oil lamps.Other causes are collisions withboats, entanglements in fishing gear, and noise disturbances fromhuman activities.Restrictions were placed on hunting of sperm whales convened by the League of Nations in 1937. I think using less fueland gas and boats can help too. Habitat Lives in the Pelagic Zone,or found far from land, in areas with a water depthof 1,968 ft. or more. Concentrated mostlyin the middle latitudes. Sperm Whale (Physeter Macrocephalus) Eats squid, sharks, bony fishes, rays, and skates. The sperm whale is only a predator. No animal is large enough to eatan adult sperm whale. A sperm whale can eatwhenever. If the sperm whale disappeared, their food chain wouldnot be maintained, and the sperm whales prey would overpopulate. Diet and Role One calf every five years.
