However, Freud was an id psychologist, and Erikson was an ego psychologist. He emphasized the role of culture and society and the conflicts that can take place within the ego itself, whereas Freud emphasized the conflict between the id and the superego.http://www.simplypsychology.org/Erik-Erikson.html Like Freud and many others, Erik Erikson maintained that personality develops in a predetermined order, and builds upon each previous stage. This is called the epigenic principle.http://www.simplypsychology.org/Erik-Erikson.html Erik Erikson coined the term identity crisis and believed that it was one of the most important conflicts people face in development. http://psychology.about.com/od/theoriesofpersonality/a/identitycrisis.htm The development of identity seems to have been one of his greatest concerns in Erikson's own life as well as in his theory. During his childhood, and his early adulthood, he was Erik Homberger, and his parents kept the details of his birth a secret. So here he was, a tall, blond, blue-eyed boy who was also Jewish. At temple school, the kids teased him for being Nordic; at grammar school, they teased him for being Jewish. http://webspace.ship.edu/cgboer/erikson.html
